For multi-tier and wedding cakes, 3-5 days advance notice is ideal.

As a general guide — 0.5 Kg serves 4-5 people, 1 Kg serves 8-10, 1.5 Kg serves 12-15, 2 Kg serves 16-20, and 3 Kg serves 25-30. For parties where cake is one of many desserts, you can go one size smaller.
